The little town of Maltahöhe on the edge of the Schwarzrand plateau was founded in 1899 by Henning von Burgsdorf, who in those days was governor of the Gibeon district in southern German South West Africa. He named the place after his wife Malta.
The Maltahöhe Hotel was founded in 1907 and is therefore the oldest country hotel in Namibia. The town is a centre for sheep farming and provides supply for surrounding farms. It lies close to The Swartrand escarpment.
Day trips can be done to Sossusvlei via Sesriem Canyon, Duwisib Castle and Kub, which is a former German colonial police station on the banks of the seasonal Fish River. The area also offers a wide variety of bird life.
